Tentei informar-me.

Re-match
Two weeks ago I missed out on the Lisbon Marathon due to health issues. That raised to 5 (perhaps more?) the number of races I signed up for and then ended up not running, just in the last couple of months.
While the fees involved are not entirely neglectible, it is the mental stress that concerns me the most when something like this happens. In order to overcome this mental barrier, I've already signed up for five races, the first being this very night and the last one in early December.
None of them, however, is an actual full distance Marathon. With an even score in this dreaded competition (one completed and one dropout), I'm literally itching to prove myself capable of doing it again. And a third time, and every time I so damn please for that matter. Unfortunately, it seems like the next come coming around this western-most side of Europe is only due June. I'll be waiting.
Until then I'll keep collecting lower rank medals. Time goals, as of now, are pretty modest though. Only in the Lisbon Half-Marathon (December) will I actually even try to beat a personal record. Still, I don't consider myself defeated by my former self in any distance range. Be it 10Km, 21Km or 42Km, there will be a re-match. And then another and yet another after that, until I finally renew my time scores. What then? Well, records are meant to be broken. Re-Match.
(December 2013, forgotten in the draft sections until now)

Re-Match.

Mau Gosto
Sejamos francos.

About Time
A few days ago, while watching the actually-not-so-bad About Time movie, I was yet again reminded of this wonderful (American?) custom of kissing a girl at 00.00 in New Year's Eve. In Portugal we have a different custom: to eat twelve horrible raisins.
We can despise the Americans for many things. but they sure know how to get their holiday traditions straight. Certainly a beautiful girl's lips taste better than that dreadful fruit. Unless, perhaps, if she has just eaten two handful of them. We undoubtedly love to "learn" and copy things from others, not just Americans. It's about time we start adopting the good stuff.
Back to the movie, if you've watched the trailer you might have noticed the tagline. If you could relive any moment... could you make life perfect? The question, besides somewhat summarising the film's main theme, is quite interesting. If we could. what actions would we undo, what words would we take back? Or rather, would we take action where we stood still and say the words left unspoken?
Sometimes people say they've done something and never looked back, in the sense that they are sure of having made the right choice. I, perhaps unfortunately, do not find myself amongst those ranks. I tend to look back again and again, until I am so much further down the road I can no longer see where it began. This is not, however, necessarily a sad process. There are those things which, when brough back from our sea of memories, always manage to make us smile.
Of course there are many thngs that we would like to have done differently. Still, going back to "fix" them would ruin some of the magic that surrounds our lives, very much like over-planned vacations. There must always be room for the unexpected, the unknown, the mistake. Could you make life perfect by relieving any moment you'd wish? It's a trick question. What is perfection anyway?

The Student's Guide for Writing a Thesis
The other day I found myself thinking about this funny movie (based on a previous book) named The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Basicly, some aliens decided that unfortunately Earth needs to be destroyed for it lies on the path of a still-to-build inter-galactic highway. Fortunately for the story's "hero", he's neighbour and friend was actually an alien in disguise who decides to save to take him away from the planet before its demolition and so starts a crazy inter-galactic journey that eventually leads to the so needed guide.
Unfortunately for my readers, I still don't feel prepared to write about my 3rd degree contacts and inter-galactic journeys. Instead, I decided to write (once again) about what has filled my mind for the past few months: my master thesis. This odd combination therefore lead to The Student's Guide for Writing a Thesis.
First of all, it is important to state what is expected of the reader after careful study of this guide, so that he/she can track his/her progress and ability. The uneducated might expect that, after reading such a guide, one would be prepared to write a thesis. This is obviously plain wrong; more, it defies the very foundations of logic. There is no such thing as being prepared for writing a thesis. Instead, this document intends to nudge the reader away from all the mistakes committed by the author and/or of his knowledge, so as to leave room for other more interesting and novel mistakes. I repeat for the sake of emphasis: interesting and novel. This is what people expect from your thesis.

I repeat for the sake of emphasis: interesting and novel. This is what people expect from your thesis.
- Do no expect to change the world. High expectations are a bitch, and they will kill all of your motivation (trust me, you will need it) if you let them. Truth is, most likely you are too dumb to do anything of real value. Even if you have that potential, chances are you will be too lazy to fullfil it. In the unlikely event of you actually being able to do something valuable and interesting, you won't have the creative writing skill necessary to write it down while complying with the dreaded theses templates. Finally, if with some divine assistance you do manage to accomplish all that, your thesis still will remain unread and left to rot in some god forgotten library. Your grandma might read it though, so you can aim to change her life instead.
- Coldplay, Antony and the Johnsons and Katie Melua all have awesome songs, but they are not what you need in this time of your life. Stick with Dragonforce, Emerald Sword, Rise Against and the like.
- In the acknowledgements section, do not thank your dog. Even though I am sure it is a remarkably clever animal, your narrow minded examiners will see it as a weak inspiration source. Similarly, do not thank God. Many before you have already done that, and you might be indicted with plagium.
- Do not misspell your supervisor or examiner's name. Chances are they won't like it.
- Do not start writing your thesis away head of the deadline. My athletics instructor used to say something like "when you cross the finishing line, you'll be feeling like crap anyway, so you might as well start running fast from the beginning and get it over with quickly". The reverse applies here. Your thesis will only be ready about thirty minutes before the delivery date, and it will be crap anyway. Might as well save yourseld some trouble and start writing it the week before.
- When working in your thesis, if you have friends nearby, you are screwed. Half of them are in the same situation as you are, and will steal your precious energies with their constant whining about their dull theses. The other half will keep inviting you to all sorts of events (they're on vacations and/or unemployed and thus absolutely bored). A thorough study of which type of friends is more harmful has not yet been conducted (future work section!) but it has been proven beyond doubt that having them around will endanger your finishing your thesis.
- When working in your thesis, if you don't have friend nearby, you are screwed. You will spend all your "working" time thinking about them and how great it would be to have them around.
- When working in your thesis, you are srewed.
- Sleeping is overrated. Statistics say that about 50% of any work with a fixed deadline is performed from its start until the day before, while the other half is accomplished in that last sleepless night. In the case of a master thesis, this means that one single sleepless night equals to months of proper sleep time. You do the math.
- The "advisor" field in your thesis' template is wrong; it should read "sponsor" instead. Therefore, do not expect to get any actual advice. Instead, you should expect (and demand!) constant praise of your work to others, even if he has no clue whatsoever what the hell you are doing. Do you, for that matter?
- Do not feel sad if, during your thesis' defense, no one even knows the title of your work. Recall that, until a couple of hours before, you didn't either. Moreover, half those people have more interesting lives than you, and so cannot waste their precious time with such garbage. The other half do not have a life at all, and so cannot risk getting one by mistake by reading potentially something interesting.
- Words are better than numbers. Numbers can be proven wrong, while with words at most someone might disagree with them.
- Do not reference any work which is actually better than yours. The worse a paper is, the more you should try to include it somehow. Writing something like "[3], while not at all related to this work, absolutely sucks" is perfectly acceptable and will help building an adequate frame for your wonderful thesis.
- After reading 12 (you are reading this carefully, right?) you should know that the "State Of The Art" section is not what it seems. First of all, what you are doing is sure as hell not an art. Still, even ignoring that important fact, you really do not want to speak about the actual state of the art. There are billions of people in the world, so chances are one of them already tackled your problem in a much more successful way. Instead, what you should seek are those dumb as a lamb (this should definately be an idiomatic expression) researchers who tried to do something similar. Start by taking a look at your one-year-ahead colleagues' work. You can also cite the Mayans or the Romans and cleverly forget to include the reference date. Cite ancient Greeks at your own account. Some of those bastards actually did know what they were doing.
- In the "Motivation" section, what people expect to read is why in god's name would somehow think of doing all the silly things you tried to do. It is not concerned with your actual motivation, so you should avoid truthful statements like "I need the diploma in order to get a job" or "My girlfriend says she's tired of dating a simple graduate". Tricky one.
- Your results do not suck. It might seem so, for the unkeen eye, but elaborate statistic will actually show that under the right circumstances they are actually quite brilliant. If you still cannot see that, changes are you suck at statistics as well. Get an engineer to help you. If you are a girl, that shouldn't hard to accomplish. Otherwise, perhaps you should consider being an engineer yourself.
- Balmer's peak has yet to be proven empirically, and should not be trusted. Being plain drunk is fine though.
- Although not formally proven, legend has it that reading blogs will not help you in your quest.

Lisbon Night Run
Yesterday I went to the Lisbon Night Run (10 Km). Overall it was an interesting race, and I guess it reached its main goal of lighting up the city (they gave all runners this speleology lights ). For one, I was in really bad shape (tough weak) and thus just wanted to run it quite relaxed and without any concerns whatsoever with timings. And so I did, crossing the finishing line with the timer marking some (terrible) 49' 41''.
Still, there were some "details" which I did not like. First of all, the two support spots along the track (~3Km and ~7.5Km). Although this is obviously a matter of personal preference, I do fare much better with a single one around the 5-6th Km. Then, the promise of departing zones by previous time records was not met. Finally and most importantly, the kilometer marking were (surely!) wrong. No idea how they messed that up, but it is really enfuriating for a runner.
In order to spice a little bit this dull and short post, two short remarks are in orders. The first concerns the water bottles provided during these races. In short races like this one, I'd say the average runner only drinks about 10cl at each stop. The waste of water (and plastic, due to the casings) you see in every single one of these races is enormous. Clearly some shorted water bottles should exist, if for no other reason than for this purpose alone. In fact, there are so many of these events nowadays that this might be a niche market waiting for an innovative company to come and claim it.
Secondly, it is funny how we can numb the body (with localised pain-killers) in order to get a race done, but not the mind. Perhaps yet another (odd) consequence of the triumph of mind over body.

Return
My last post was on the 23rd of September, which makes this one of the longest periods of literary drought since the very beginning of this blog, back in early 2009. Oddly enough, it was also probably one of the periods of my life in which I wrote more. Unfortunately, I did not find my master thesis to be interesting enough to publish in here.
Last Tuesday I went back to IST (my University) in order to fill some paper and wrap-up some formalities. I must say it was somewhat odd to return there after about three months of abstinence; after all I hadn't ever been away for much more than one month for the last five years. The construction work which were taking place at the secondary entrance for as long as I can remember were obviously over, in a classic mockery.
Passing through ISR( Institute for Systems and Robotics ), my previous (research) workplace, was particularly odd. On my way up on the elevator I kept thinking whether or not to return my access card. I would get my deposit (5€) back, but it would mean losing something which already starts to feel like a pleasant souvenir.
"My" chair had someone else's coat over it. Still, my desk remained as clean and empty as the moment I left it, and as it never while I worked over there. I guess it probably doesn't miss me much.
Soon, I'll be returning to IST for my very last time as a student. In the meantime, hopefully I'll find the time to write from time to time.
Filipe Baptista de Morais
PS: in the end I forgot all about the key card, so I ended up not returning it without reaching any kind of conclusion. Guess it must mean something.

Passion, Fire My Heart
When I was younger I used to love playing this collectible card game called Magic, The Gathering. I could spend entire days going through my cards thinking about good combos to employ in my decks (never really felt like looking for them online) and I still have hundreds (thousands?) of those cards wandering around. The most amazing thing about that passion, besides the large sums of money I was willing to spend on it, was the ammount of mental energy I had available for it. I could name hundreds of those cards, as well as their effects and even picture their illustrations in my mind (I would draw them if I could survive the embarassment). Some of the cards also had somewhat random quotes taken from the series of books (which I have never read) and I also knew most of them by heart.
One of my favourite cards, which was in fact as common as they get, had this quote: Passion, fire my heart. Though seemingly taken from a cheesy romantic book, the phrase was actually a war cry. The card was called Crown Of Fury (really nasty thing in a Goblins deck by the way) and had absolutely nothing to do with love or women. The lesson, already stated repeatedly in this blog, goes as follows: whatever your goal is, be it chasing a woman or slaughtering a bunch of wood elves, you will do it best if you do it with passion.
It is also interesting to notice the association with fire. Fire is a reckless force of nature, blind and unrelenting in its path of destruction. Blind, but blinding as well in all its bright glowing might. So too can untamed passions blind and burn us. And if left to spread and burn strong at their will, they too have a tendency to die out fast. However, look at anyone who has ever really succeeded at anything and you will find the common denominator is the passion for what they do.
Unfortunately, passion is not really something we can create; there is no switch for turning that driving force on. As in Springsteen's song, you can't start a fire without a spark. We can, however, fuel or smother, just like an actual fire. Similarly to when lighting a fireplace, one can use that first tiny spark to light something much larger and more beautiful. This need to be available is also present in Bruce's song, for instance when he sings you can't start a fire worried about your little world falling apart.
The war cry thus seems most appropriate for times when our strength falters and our spirits grow weary. Instead of praying for luck or divine intervention, remember that willpower is mankind's most powerful motor, and that is all you need or should desire to attain your goals. Passion, fire my heart.

Autocarro

Equally Sad
This morning I was reading this news about an unusually high number of people being killed by lightning in India in the last twenty-four hours and was puzzled by the way they emphasised some of them were women. I understand the death of children may seem particularly tragic, by why would women dying be any more disturbing than men is something I really don't get.
I suppose if we were talking about civilian casualties in a war scenario it could make sense, even though a male civilian is every bit as defenseless as a female one when facing armed and trained soldiers. In a natural disaster context however, the distinction seems accidental and meaningless.

Lisboa Não É A Cidade Perfeita

Science Fiction
Two years ago I had the pleasure to take a short course entitled "How Physics Inspires Science Fiction" at the Vienna University of Technology. Later if suffered a subtle change towards the more accurate "How Science Inspires Science Fiction". Although it might seem a say-nothing title with the intent of coating a do-nothing course (which would still make an excellent excuse to travel to Vienna) the course revealed itself to be surprisingly interesting.
As the title suggests, the course was about the way actual/real Science influences Science Fiction. I was amazed to discover that many authors are extremely meticulous when writing their fiction stories, constraining them with the laws of Physics and others. Two examples, Rendezvous With Rama and The Wind From The Sun immediately come to mind. But if the stories are so accurate in Scientific terms, then why are they considered Science Fiction?
Catch is, even though the behaviour of objects (in its most general meaning) appears to be correct, there may be unfeasible underlying assumptions. An author may, for instance, speak about a realistic space ship which would cost 1e20€ to build, or made of materials with excessively high welding temperatures. In this sense, Science Fiction strolls ahead of Science, waiting for new technologies and procedures to make it possible.
Another possibility is to leave unmentioned important details (the ones that make something unthinkable at the time of writing), thus avoiding the necessity of lying / making things up. This is even more interesting, in that it allows the author to predict events far more distant in the future. I believe this to be the case of Jules Verne's Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, as well as others.
In both cases it is clear that the inverse relation also exists; that is, one could take a course on "How Science Fiction Inspires Science". I was therefore excited to wait and see any of those stories come true, wondering how long it would take. Turns out the future was much closer than I'd thought.
The Wind From The Sun, already refered to hereabove, fantasised about space ships powered by solar energy, through the use of solar sails (thus the wind in the title). Believe it or not, a solar plane such as that already exists. The Solar Impulse is capable of carrying one passenger and has already proved itself capable of flying day and night (26 consecutive hours) without fuel. Current challenge is to achieve an all-around the globe travel in 2015. You can check the project here; I recommend watching some of the videos with the project's dreamers. They are truly inspiring.
So let's not make the same mistake as Philipp von Jolly when he stated that " (...) almost everything is already discovered (...) ". If running out of ideas, just pick a book and make it true.

Indesejados

42
42 is an interesting number, which can refer to many things: just google it or check it on wikipedia. Among other (more or less interesting) stuff, 42 Km is the length of a Marathon (actually it's a few meters short).
Being a long-distance runner is a tough hobby for one who's never run a full marathon. You can have a plethora of 10Km races and Half-Marathons in your "career". but when you tell someone about your hobby they'll undoubtly reply "Ah, so you run marathons?". The marathon has that distinct and powerful appeal; compared to it all other races seem child's play. No wonder after my explaining that I run not-so-long-distances people sighed disappointed bit "Oh....". Furthermore, when speaking about me, nobody would actually say I'm a long-distance runner. They'd simply say I run marathons, a lie I would later on have to undo. But not anymore.
For me, the marathon now had a much stronger importance: it was the only sports activity which had defeated me. Sure, I've lost plenty of football and tennis matches, but in that situation you lose to the other player/team and you can attribute it to their skills. It's totally different from giving up on a match, that I never did (actually I'm quite sure my account of saved match-points is much impressive than the % of matches won). And I'd never given up on an athletics competition either until (nor did I do it again afterwards) my first Marathon attempt in Faro, last October. It's a really sad situation, since you know the failure is yours and yours alone. It really hurts somewhere deep inside, leaving some ugly dent in your self-esteem. Until, that is, you prove yourself that you can overcome it.
Despite the importance this race had to me, I almost missed it. A huge workload from my studies prevented me from having the preparation I wanted (and needed) and a slight cold stuck me on the day before, making me wonder if it really was worth the try. I guess it was the bitter taste of defeat still lingering from last year's race that got me up to run this morning.
One of the things I really believe helped through this race was my Ipod, which I was not allowed to use the previous time. For that reason, I'll go through some of the songs I've listened to throughout the race, describing what I remember from when it was played. Since I was expecting a really long workout (my playlist had over 5h of music) I didn't really take the time to sort them; I just programmed the Ipod to play them randomly, with the exception of the first (chosen) and the powersong, which would only play when I ordered it.
Let's Get It Started (Black Eyed Peas) - Start. What could be more appropriate? The starting area was not that crowded (not as much as other competitions at least), mostly due to the fact that all the races taking part today had different time departures. Nicely done organization comitee! That allowed me to uneffortly keep track of my teammate Graça Roldão from "Os Tugas", our unofficial running team. Due to her large experience and good results in marathons I decided to try and stick with her for this one and we ended up crossing the finishing line together. Looking back, I'm not sure if I could've done if I were alone. But at this point the race was just starting, the Ipod kept shouting "and the base keeps running, running, and running, running..." and although I'm no base I did keep running. Determined, yet not confident.
Born To Run (Bruce Springsteen) ~ 5Km. Although the meaning of the song is totally different, I love listening to Born To Run when running. It's one of those songs that really seem to empower me; I started to set my fears aside and enjoying the race completely. Although we were still in the urban area of Lisbon, the city and its surroundings are quite beautiful making running in it a real pleasure. When though it's known as "city of the seven hills". Yes, obvious reasons.
Hearts On Fire (Cut Copy) ~ 10Km. Almost certainly the most repetitive song I like, it did its job without further ado. At this point we were descending quite a lot, which made me worry about the return. And with good reason as I came to learn. On the 10th kilometer mark the chronometer marked 50m32s.
Emerald Sword (Rhapsody Of Fire) ~15Km. Recommended by a friend of mine, I really came to like this song, among other of the same band. Certainly a nice tune for running.
Give It All (Rise Against) ~21Km. One of my favourite running songs, somewhat was ted so early in the race since I believe it could bring the back from the dead. Or from being lay down on the concrete. Not a good call auto-play, not at all. I crossed the Half-Marathon finishing line, this time without the naive thought of being halfway there. Every runner who's been through it knows the 21st Km is not the middle of the marathon, that lies somewhere close to the 30th maybe. The chronometer marked 1h45m, but I didn't let get over my head. I knew I still had a lot to overcome.
Cat People (David Bowie) ~25Km. Lovely song, also present in one of my favourite movies. It made me smile and, as you all know, sound mind leads to a sound body.
Through The Fire And Flames (DragonForce) ~28Km. One of the most powerful songs in my collection, with strongly motivational lyrics. I couldn't help but remember the numerous times where I struggled with its notes in Guitar Hero. Still, its tempo is perhaps too fast for a Marathon; I had to resist the urge of speeding up my pace.
Startfire (DragonForce) - 30Km. I chose this moment to play my chosen powersong for the first time. A really unsual slow song by DragonForce (it starts with a beautiful sound of a piano with a cascade on background) it seemed appropriate to the slow pace I knew I would need to keep to finish the Marathon. The lyrics are motivation enough.
Points Of Authority (Linkin Park) ~35Km. "You can't run the race/ the pace is too fast/ you just won't last". What the hell? You're supposed to help Mr. Ipod... I cursed the random music player and skipped to the next song.
Startfire (DragonForce) - 37Km. Why oh why did our ancestor build our city on these accursed hills? We were finally going up the hill to the finish line, but my legs' cry for mercy made me reward them with the powerwong again. I didn't stop running though (the whole time). The chronometer marked 3h14m38s.
Best Of You (Foo Fighters) ~38Km. Yep, there were many people getting the best of me (I was barely moving). But I was also getting the best of lots of people (perhaps mostly the same people, as everyone kept accelerating/decelarating). The Portuguese minister of Education, Nuno Crato, once wrote a mathematical proof showing that, in a traffic jam with multiple lines, everyone spends more time being passed by other cars than passing by them. Perhaps the same could be applied in this situation.
Go For The Goal (Pop) ~40Km. Although I usually play the music in the beginning of a race, I must say it fits beautifully in the end as well. Five points for Ipod auto-play.
Minority (Green Day) ~ 40Km. True, I really did want to belong to the minority of people who've crossed that finish line.At this point my mind wasn't really capable of much more elaborated thinking, so there's not much to say.
Original Prankster (The Offspring) ~41Km. "You can do it". Indeed; after crossing the 41st Km mark I finally allowed myself to acknowledge I'd really finish it: I'd crawl my way to the finish line if I had to.
I finally finished the race with the official time of 3h 52m 33s. It was an amazing experience, leading to a sort of cathartic feeling. I congratulate the organization both for the event itself (there were plenty of support areas with adequate drinks/food) and the souvenirs (2 T-shirts plus the medal). For now, I think I'll go back to running half-marathons (I've met my challenge), but I'll certainly go back to the "real deal" later on.
